In an attempt at uniting the world against climate change, Prominent World leaders will be gathering for the next annual UN Climate Change conference in Glasgow on Sunday. This years conference will be held at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC), a world class venue in the heart of Glasgow, running from the 31st of October till the 12th of November
President of the 26th UN climate change conference, Alok Sharma stated:
“We cannot afford to let the golden opportunity of a green, inclusive and resilient recovery pass by.”
Today, Greenhouse gas levels are at new highs, with CO2 concentration in 2020 at 149% of pre-industrial times. The economic slowdown caused by the pandemic has had little to no real impact on reducing rising CO2 levels.
Goals at this years conference:
1. Secure global net zero by mid-century and keep 1.5 degrees within reach
- Accelerate the phase-out of coal
- Curtail deforestation
- Speed up the switch to electric vehicles and material handling
- Encourage investment in renewable technologies and companies
2. Adapt to protect communities and natural habitats
- Protect and restore ecosystems
- Build defenses, warning systems and resilient infrastructure and agriculture to avoid loss of homes, livelihoods and even lives
3. Mobilize finance
To deliver on the first two goals, in collaboration with financial institutes, developing countries must honor their promises to mobilize at least $100 billion in climate finance per year by 2020.
4. Work together to deliver
- Finalize the Paris Agreement rulebook
- Accelerate action to tackle the climate crisis through collaboration between governments, businesses and civil society.
